Many great books exist on Ayrton Senna – Keith Sutton’s intimate portrait and Tony Dodgins’ account on all of Senna’s races come to mind. We can only recommend adding French photographer, Bernard Asset’s charming little book (24 x 22 cm) to that collection.
Asset has followed F1 for decades and built up an incredible photo archive over the years. The pictures – some previously unpublished – are the obvious points of interest, but fortunately, there is a lot more to this book than that. After so many years in the sport, Asset is very well-connected, and this shows in the testimonials that introduce us to Senna, the man. There is little room for myth building here: most speak of his generosity and compassion.
One of the book’s highlights is its French origin, which gives voice to opinions rarely expressed in the English-language-led world of motorsport. There’s F1 designer, Gérard Ducarouge’s glorification of the Brazilian superstar, but also French TV commentator, Pierre Van Vliet’s very personal, and very private, insight into what Ayrton and Vivian Senna did for him. Alain Prost shares his thoughts, as do Ron Dennis – in a handwritten note – Lisa Dennis and Jo Ramirez… The usual suspects are all present.
Refreshing though, and with 30 years of perspective, are the views of Cesare Fiorio; Honda F1 project leader, Osamu Goto; Michael Andretti and Renault’s Bruno Mauduit, plus many more. For €90, you receive a hardcover book – available in English or French – in a slipcase, with a dedicated note by Bernard Asset and a contact sheet from a portrait series.
