Jewelry on parade: Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance

Prior to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, set for this weekend, owners were eager to show their beauties on the road as well. Peter Singhof caught them on the move at the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.

The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance is in reality a first taste of what the Concours will bring. For most owners, the Tour is also the opportunity to have their cars photographed on the move, along the scenic Highway 1.

Last year’s winner Fritz Burkard took things a bit further this year. The Swiss owner drove his Bugatti T57 Atalante all the way from Newport, Rhode Island to Pebble Beach, where he was greeted by Chairman Sandra Button. And then, he took part in the Pebble Beach Tour as well, adding well over 3000 miles to the Bugatti’s tally.

Ferrari 250 LM

Among the instant stand-out cars, we’d name the 1935 Aston Martin MkII Bertelli Sports Saloon, the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM that raced for Maranello Concessionaires, Ferrari’s UK importer. Chassis #5895 had Roy Salvadori, Jacky Ickx, Lucien Bianchi and Innes Ireland behind the wheel. Also, it’s one of two 250 LMs at Pebble Beach this year. We love the 1957 Chrysler Super Dart 400 Coupe as well, and who doesn’t get wobbly knees when a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato enters the frame? Incidentally, the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato is one of the centrepieces in this year’s Pebble Beach Concours.

Outrageous Bugatti T101

We’d qualify the 1965 Bugatti T101 C-X Roadster as outrageous. Probably the only car in the world that can render almost anonymous the Maserati MC12 that just crosses it, going the other way. The one thing we do fear, seeing a convoy of Land Rover Defenders going by, as what this will mean for their value, now Defenders seem to have become Concours material.
