Goodwood Revival 2021
This must have been the busiest weekend of historic racing, with Goodwood Revival, Bernina Gran Turismo, GP Tazio Nuvolari, Circuit des Remparts, 1000 Km Nürburgring… and we are forgetting some. Impressions from all over Europe.
First off, the Goodwood Revival of course. Minis almost rolling over each other fighting, glorious racing in the sunset, Jaguar E-Types sliding all over the place. A classic. Bonhams hammered an ex-Innes Ireland Lotus Elite S1 (1960) for 113.854 Euros (including premiums) at the Goodwood Sale, which also saw an ex-works MG M-Type Double Twelve Le Mans Sports (1924) find a new owner for 92.423 Euros. The ex-Valentine Lyndsey 1956 Jaguar D-Type (XKD 570) sold for 930.638 Euros (including premiums).
Perhaps most importantly, the Goodwood Revival was the final chance to see that most famous of SLRs take a final driving trip. Indeed, Mercedes announced that from now on ‘722’, the Mercedes 300 SLR Stirling Moss and Dennis Jenkinson drove to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia, would only appear on static display.
The hill climb on the Bernina pass is now part of the larger Internationale St Moritzer Automobilwoche, but still the undisputed highlight of this ever-larger automotive event in the Swiss Alps. It had Ronnie Kessel flying through the mountains in a Martini-liveried Alfa 155… I mean. Cyan Racing had 2017 touring car world champion Thed Björk redecorate the Swiss tarmac with long black stripes in Cyan’s Volvo P1800 restomod, whilst it had the championship-winning Volvo S60 on static display at the Motorsport Rendezvous garden party (where we also launched Tazio). Danish specialist Kalmar showed the impressive Kalmar RS, a Safari-style Porsche restomod. No, we don’t have the necessary money either.
RM Sotheby’s held a first auction at Sankt Moritz, seeing the 2002 McLaren MP4-17D in which David Coulthard won the 2003 Australian Grand Prix, sell for 1,6 million Euros.
Over in Mantua, we of course felt sorry we could not present Tazio Magazine to the participants of the GP Tazio Nuvolari. Judging by the pictures, they still had fun. The same can be said for the traditional Circuit des Remparts in Angoulême (France) and the first recreation of the 1000 km of the Nürburgring (on the Nordschleife) for historic race cars. If weekends like these are anything to go by, historic cars are here to drive for a long time to come.
