Sun, sea… and screaming engines at Zandvoort Historic GP

After a two-year hiatus, the Historic Grand Prix returned to the beautiful Zandvoort circuit, by the sea in The Netherlands. With sports cars, F1s, F3s and much more, the Historic GP was looking at a full three-day program.

By combining fields from the Masters Historic series, the FIA Historic F3 European Cup, the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association and different Dutch championship classes, the Zandvoort Historic GP had some of the world’s best classic racing on offer.

In the Masters Racing Legends, it was all about Marco Werner in the Lotus 87B. The German triple Le Mans-winner won both races. The award for most unlucky driver went to Paul Grant, who started one lap down on the others… because he was still taking lunch when he should have been in the car already.

Sports Car Legends

In the Masters Sports Car Legends, father and son David and Olivier Hart managed to get their Lola T70 M3B in front of Tom Bradshaw’s Chevron B19 for the win. Julian Thomas and Calum Lockie in their Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé took victory in the 90-minute Masters Gentleman Drivers race, one lap ahead of Bernhard van Oranje and Tom Coronel in their Cobra Daytona Coupé and David and Olivier Hart in a Bizzarini 5300 GT.

Historic F3

Race one in the Masters Endurance Legends ended behind the safety car. Steve Tandy bagged the win in his Peugeot 90X. He would replicate that feat in race 2. The historic F3s had two races. Davide Leone in a March 783 won race one, Frédéric Rouvier (March 783) took race two.

In the paddock, BMW was celebrating the 50 years of its M division. With a 2004 Williams-BMW F26, the 1990 Spa 24 Hours-winning BMW M3 and a 1979 BMW M1, some of the brand’s iconic race cars were on display along with the M models for the public road.
