Over the past weekend, Alfa Romeo went all out celebrating the centenary of Italy’s most famous track: Monza. The brand emphasized the strong Milanese link that unites Alfa Romeo and the Italian ‘temple of speed’.
Up until 2009, the Milano name featured proudly on the Alfa Romeo badges. The ‘Biscione’, the dragon, still visually links Alfa to the Italian city to which it retains a close relationship, even if Alfa production has left the city long ago. With 100 years of Monza on the agenda, Alfa Romeo felt the time was right to reconnect with what is still the cradle of the company. On top of that, Alfa has a long tradition of competing at Monza, after all its home track.
Last weekend, Alfa Romeo celebrated the 100 years of Monza in style, during the Italian F1 Grand Prix. First of all, the Alfa Romeo team had made a dedicated video with Valtteri Bottas to put the spotlight on Monza, with a spectacular run in front of the Duomo in the heart of Milan. Oddly enough, all the on-track footage was recorded at Alfa’s test track at Balocco. Monza, however, was not Alfa’s best race, as the squad had to be satisfied with just the single point Zhou Guanyu brought home.
Beyond Formula 1, things were more impressive however. Alfa Romeo had organised a parade of some 112 historic vehicles at Monza on Saturday. And on Sunday, the historic parade saw a fleet of 100 of the new Giulia GTA models join the troop on a tour across Milan towards Monza. The 6C 1750 Super Sport from 1929 was a distinguished visitor, along with the 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato led the parade on board these two iconic Alfa models.
