The 80th Goodwood Members’ Meeting put the spotlight on GT1s, on the 60-year anniversary of the Porsche 911 and on racing in general. Máté Boér was there, enjoyed the spectacle and brought us back these images.
Dueling Cortina’s! It could just as well have been Robin’s next cry to Batman, but it was instead one of the highlights of the 80th Goodwood Members’ Meeting. What a field it was.
The Jim Clark Trophy consisted solely of Lotus Cortinas. With drivers like Steve Soper, Tom Kristensen, Emanuele Pirro, Rob Huff, the Franchitti brothers, Karun Chandhok – the list goes on and on – it’s hard to imagine this race being anything other than a display of the various stages of oversteer. This is how it turned out in the end as well, with the duo Dickenson/Jordan ending up 4.5 seconds in front of Brundle/Thomas after a 45-minute race.
The big talking point at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting was the GT1 demo. A demo that brought the Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT, the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R, the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive, the Chrysler Viper GTS-R and the Aston Martin DBR9 together. Exotica like Bobby Verdon-Roe’s Lister Storm GTM and Cor Euser’s Marcos LM600 only further enhanced the experience.
And what about Riccardo Patrese and David Brabham lapping together in two Brabham BT52s? One was the car with which Patrese won the season-ending South African GP in 1983, the other the car with which Piquet won the F1 world title in extremis in that same race. It all comes together at Goodwood.
For 60 years of the Porsche 911, all kinds of racing versions of the 911 got together. As in; the 1998 Le Mans-winning GT1, the 996 GT1 Evo, 3.0 Carrera RSR (turbo), 935 K3, 993 GT2 Evo. Impressive stuff.
Finally, a word on the Trofeo Nuvolari for pre-war sports cars. Richard Bradley in his 1936 Aston Martin Speed won, ahead of Gareth Burnett (1939 Alta Two Seater Sports) and Robert Beebee (1932 Frazer Nash TT replica).
In the meantime, Goodwood has confirmed Porsche – celebrating 75 years of the company – will be the central brand at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (13 – 16 July). Also, at the Revival (8 – 10 September) a field of thirty 2-litre Porsche 911s will run on synthetic fuel in the Fordwater Trophy.
