Just weeks after the centenary running of the Le Mans 24 Hours, another party is ready to get underway: Le Mans Classic. It promises to be… well, another classic.
Peter Auto’s Le Mans Classic has of course its own celebration of a century of the Le Mans 24 Hours. Over three days, the program is filled to the brim with car racing from all different eras.
Organiser Peter Auto got hold of a large number of former winners. Five-time winner Derek Bell is present, Gérard Larrousse will be driving the 1970 ‘Hippie’ Porsche 917 Langheck we feature on the cover of our current issue, Henri Pescarolo (four Le Mans victories) will drive together with Emanuel Collard in a Pescarolo C60. Yannick Dalmas will be behind the wheel of a McLaren F1 GTR and Eric Helary is driving a Ford GT40 among others.
Next to the six grids representing cars from different eras, there are separate racing classes for the Group Cs and the Endurance Racing Legends. In this last field, we counted no less than five Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello Prodrive cars present, out of the ten that raced. Impressive.
Next to these, there is a Benjafield Bentley race, for prewar Bentleys only. Sixty cars are entered. And there is a Porsche-only field as well. With so many fields, racing will go on well into the night on both Friday and Saturday. This weekend is also the final opportunity to go visit the special Le Mans winners exhibition in the Le Mans museum at the track.
After a test last year, Aramco is providing synthetic fuels for half the field this year, making a large step for the use of more environment-friendly fuels. More on the program of Le Mans Classic can be found here. The live stream is available here.
