Eifel Rallye Festival: Ten editions of wonderful sideways rally action

In 2011, the German Motor Sport Club Daun, legendary photographer Reinhold Klein and his Slowly Sideways enthusiasts group, aided by our columnist Christian Geistdörfer, started the Eifel Rallye Festival. Over the next ten editions, the event became the biggest classic rally fest in the world. This book looks back on the first ten editions.

McKlein, who runs his own publishing business, found the time to look back on ten editions of the Eifel Rallye Festival, with this, a 304-page tribute book. The only downside is that the book had to be printed without coverage of the 2023 event, so that will have to wait for the next decade.

Private owners as well as legends

Other than that, this book on the Eifel Rallye Festival is a typical McKlein product: well-documented, well-presented and resplendent through its many evocative photographs. It’s been a smart approach by author Jürgen Hahn to not just focus on the many stars that have visited the Eifel Rallye Festival over the years: Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Hannu Mikkola, Sandro Munari,… The book also pays attention to private owners who brought remarkable cars to the festival.

All participants are listed per year, and the winners of the photo contest that was held each year, have a place in the book as well. By the way, that fabulous image on the cover of a Peugeot 205 T16 spitting flames is one of the winners of the 2018 public contest.

Anecdotes

The mix of anecdotes, like for instance the one on the rebirth of a Lancia Stratos that was destroyed in 2014 when a fire tore through a private collection in Marseille, France, make this book interesting for all, and not just the fans that went to the Eifel Rallye Festival. There is also a small story on the 1975 Safari Stratos, the car that starred on our cover in issue 6.

For just 50 euros, this nice, compact (29.7 x 21 cm) is a nice addition to a rally fan’s library. The (hardcover) book is published with German and English text, whereas the main focus lies on the quality reproduction of the images. Simply excellent work.
