Inside:

  • Porsche 718 RS 61. 550, 718 RSK and finally 718 RS 60 and RS 61. Porsche’s spyder family brought fame to what in the fifties was still a young sportscar company, with everything to prove. The brilliant Carrrera engine, low weight (just over 500 kilos) combined with mid-engined finesse, brought sublime road-holding. For the first time, Porsche was playing for overall victory. The Spyders brought victor’s trophies from multiple Targa Florios, Carrera Panamericana and Sebring to Stuttgart. And best of all, you could just buy it from the factory. Deep-dive in the history of one of Porsche’s finest race cars, sampled on-track.
  • Zak Brown, the man and his machine. What’s that Ford Capri RS 3100 doing in the McLaren Technology Centre? Well, it is the CEO’s car, and he’s only too happy to race it. Zak Brown makes time for our George East and talks about turning McLaren around in F1- congrats on the constructor’s title – and unconditional love for one of the coolest touring cars ever. Everybody loves a Fast Ford, no?
  • The 1963 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL aka the Böhringer Pagoda. When Eugen Böhringer started in the 1963 Marathon de la Route – 4 days and 4 nights of uninterrupted driving, apart from a 1-hour break – he took a big gamble, opting for Mercedes’ new, unproven SL. But Böhringer proved right in his thinking that the more nimble 230 SL would give him a competitive advantage in the hairpins in the Alps. And that’s just the beginning of this story.
  • DTM Opel Astra V8 wins Nürburgring 24 Hours. When Opel Motorsport boss Volker Strycek hinted to management that the DTM Astra V8 – a pure sprinter’s car – could be the winning ticket for the gruesome 2003 Nürburgring 24 Hours, he was told to leave the room. Strycek proved everyone wrong, and he wasn’t just content with masterminding proceedings from the pit wall, but he was part of the drivers’ crew as well.
  • If it had four wheels and an engine, you could bet Dan Gurney was in with a shot of victory. In his nine starts in the NASCAR race at Riverside, Gurney won five times. Frustratingly so for his rivals, the race became known as the ‘Gurney 500’.
  • Peter Stevens reminds us of the day he phoned Bernie Ecclestone with a plan for a new livery for the Brabham F1s. The answer came quick: ‘Can you start tomorrow?’. Some legendary liveries followed.
  • Market watch: Ferrari F1s. With specialist Jan B. Luehn, we look at the Schumacher-era F1s (and later). A guaranteed investment, and through Ferrari’s Corse Clienti program, driving one is actually easier than you’d think.
  • More F1. Siegfried Stohr took five years to get into Formula 1, but after just 13 races, his career as a professional racing driver was over. Stories from life at the back of the grid.
  • And of course, the regular columns from Hurley Haywood, Steve Soper and Christian Geistdörfer.
