This Friday and Saturday, Broad Arrow will be conducting their Amelia Auction. One of the lots is this historically significant example of Porsche’s long-unloved sports car, the 914. This Porsche 914/6 is an ex-works Monte Carlo rally car.

It may not be unfair to describe this particular 914, chassis 141 or project number 914/58, as the ultimate specimen of the breed. After all, this car ticks every one of the 914 and collector car requirements. Specifically, this is a Group 4 prepared six-cylinder GT competition variant and one of only 12 with “Werkswagen” competition provenance during 1970 and 1971 seasons at events as the Monte Carlo Rally and also as a recce car at the Targa Florio.

Full restoration

After its brief life as a works racer, the car spent thirty years in the private hands of Porsche racing engineer Walter Näher, who conducted a complete restoration to its prior Monte specification. Subsequently, in 2010, the car came into the possession of photographer, filmmaker and Porsche collector Jeff Zwart. During his custodianship, the car was presented at the 2015 Amelia Island concours, taking first in class. Since then, the car has attended the second GP Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria and was invited to the Pebble Beach Concours in 2023.

However, perhaps it would be best to delve a bit deeper into 141’s early competitive life…

Ex-Larrouse

Gérard Larrousse was selected to drive this 914 at the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally. It is important to note that year’s works effort as particularly strong due to the marque’s trio of victories at the event in the three years prior. Hence, the three Signal Orange mid-engined sportscars began their journey to the rally from Warsaw with high expectations.

Unfortunately, that year’s Monte proved itself to be a bother with extensive amounts of snow. Larrousse and co-driver Jean-Claude Perramond began the competition as entry number 1, managing to brave the weather to a great extent until a broken clutch lever put an end to their event. Afterwards, the car returned to Stuttgart and was utilised for engine testing before being used as mentioned above as Vic Elford’s recce car for the Targa Florio.

Desirable configuration

As we can see, Porsche 914s come with different specifications and histories. However, to have an example with as great provenance and in such a desirable configuration as this one, the auction guide recommends one to spend between 1.2 and 1.5 million dollars…
