Masters Historic Racing had their weekend by the seaside, during the Historic Grand Prix at Zandvoort in the Netherlands. With both rain and sun on the menu, racing was exciting in all categories.

In race 1 of the 1965-1985 F1 cars, Marco Werner took the win in a Lotus 87B. The race ended under safety car, after Wrigley and Constable ran into each other in their Tyrrell 011s whilst battling for a podium finish. Nick Padmore came second in the Lotus 77. Ken Tyrrell (Tyrrell 011) rounded out the top-three.

Race 2 started with a reverse grid. Lukas Halusa made the most of the circumstances and drove his Williams FW08 from fifth to victory. Even a quick pit stop to check for damage could not stop his run to the front. Ken Tyrrell finished second, and Matthew Wrigley made up for the crash in race with a superb third place.

Masters Sports Car Legends

Felix Haas and Michael Lyons won race 1 in the Masters Sports Car Legends series in their Lola T294. The field was boxed up after a late safety car, and released with just five minutes to go. Michael Lyons quickly built up a four second lead, which he managed to hold to the finish. Jason Wright ended the race in second in his Lola T70 Mk3B, with Michael Gans coming third in his Lola T290.

The second race – also held over 40 minutes – saw Haas and Lyons repeat their result from the first race. The duo was followed by Jason Wright, 42 seconds down. David and Olivier Hart had to switch from a Ferrari 512M in qualifying (gearbox problems) to a Lola T70 with which they ended up third.

Masters Endurance Legends

The first race of the Masters Endurance Legends series in Zandvoort went Jamie Constable’s way. Constable, in a Zytek 04S, held the slimmest of lead margins at the finish. After 23 laps, the LMP1 driver crossed the finish just 0.149 seconds ahead of Nick Padmore in the Lotus LMP2 he shared with Marco Werner. Constable made the most of a late full-course yellow, which left just one lap of racing to be done. Craig Davies and Ron Maydon came third in their Ligier JS P3.

Race 2 ended with an almost identical result, Constable winning in front of Padmore/Werner. The race was not without controversy, as Marco Werner was handed a penalty for causing contact during his pass on Constable. David and Olivier Hart ended on the final step of the podium with their Renault RS01.

Masters GT Trophy

Defending champion Craig Wilkins had to trounce a pair of Ferrari 458 GT3s to come away with the win in the first Masters GT Trophy race at Zandvoort. Wilkins’ Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo soon cleared the polesitting Lambo of Neil Glover but could do nothing about a Michael Lyons unleashed in the Ferrari he shared with Christopher Stahl. Starting from the back, Lyons managed to create a 31-second cushion at the stops, but in the second part of the race, Wilkins got the bit between his teeth to vanquish his German rival and win by 19 seconds. Jason Wright in his Ferrari ended up third.

However, Wright pounced in race 2 when his quickest rivals were each slammed with a penalty for speeding in the pitlane. The Italo-American ran his Ferrari 458 GT3 home to victory. Before his penalty, race 1 winner Craig Wilkins looked set for a repeat win in the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo, but finished 18 seconds in arrears of Wright. Lyons and Stahl finished third.

Masters Gentlemen Drivers

A solo-driving Julian Thomas survived two safety-car periods and a red flag to win the Masters Gentlemen Drivers race at Zandvoort, as the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé driver fought off the renewed challenges of Nicky Pastorelli’s Ferrari 250 GTO ’64, the Felix Haas/Michael Lyons TVR Griffith and David & Olivier Hart’s Daytona Cobra.
