Tazio 9: 60 years Porsche 911, the competition history

View Gallery

Next month, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the world’s most famous sports car: the Porsche 911. In Tazio 9, we bring you a hand-picked selection of some of the finest stories that compose the 911’s rich competition history. Rally, racing and even rally-raids. Our homage to the most versatile sports car the world has ever seen.

This year, on September 12th to be precise, it will be exactly 60 years since Porsche presented its new GT at the IAA motor show in Frankfurt. The 901 would become the 911 one year later, and it quickly rose to mythical status.

Years of perfecting

That rise was mainly down to the 911’s extraordinary talent to do well both in rallying and on the track. Even the desert proved no match for the 911. In its 60-day history, hardly a day has gone by without a 911 being thrown around a track or across a special stage. You have the unique sound of the flat-six, recognizable from afar. You have the unique positioning of the engine, behind the back axle. Something which took years to make the 911 turn into a good-handling car you could trust.

Making a mark

It’s these years of perfecting the 911 that make it stand out among the rest. For years, Porsche has taken the 911 to the track to make it a better car. From a class winner, it became a giant slayer. In Tazio 9, we dive deep into the competition history of the 911, having curated seven extraordinary feature stories that document the extraordinary tale of the world’s favourite sports car. A myth will always remain just that, but we hope that after reading Tazio 9, you will have a clearer picture as to why the 911 is so revered.
